Kim Kardashian bought Princess Diana’s necklace after she won in an auction at the Attallah Cross, where the necklace was up for bidding. The auction was held with the title Sotheby’s annual Royal and Noble Auction on Wednesday at Sotheby’s auction house in London.
The 42-year-old reality TV star is always known for her bold fashion statements, out of the blue, vintage, and iconic collections, this time the superstar got her eyes stuck on the diamond-lined cross pendant amethyst, which was a favorite one of Diana, Princess of Wales, she has been known to wear the neckpiece several times.
Kim brought the neckpiece at the cost of an enormous amount of $163,800. As per reports, the necklace got more than double its pre-auction estimate price. The pre-sale estimate of the pendant was just $80,000 to $120,000.
Reportedly, four bidders took part in the necklace’s bidding combat, where the reality TV star famed Kim Kardashian won the auction right after five minutes. A spokesman of the Kardashian said the superstar is privileged to have ownership of the fine royal collection of the princess.
What made the Kardashian purchase the old pendant with such a large amount?
The antique cross pendant is embellished with a large purple amethyst stone engraved with 5.2-carat diamonds. It is a collection from the 1920s designed by the luxury jewelry artist Garrad.
Princess Diana used to wear the necklace back in 1987 at many events; a special one to mention was the London charity gala, which is now known as Wellbeing of Women, a medical charity center for women. As per sources, the pendant was only worn by Diana, and after her death, this royal accessory was never even brought into the limelight publicly till now.
The jewelry head of Sotheby’s London, Kristian Spofforth, said that it is a rare case to have jewelry owned by the late Princess in the jewelry market, especially a neckpiece that is vibrant, bold in color, and antique. He also added to his statement that the uncommon piece is somewhat a visual and symbolic representation of the Princess’s elegance in her sartorial choices back when she used to wear it.
The antique piece was first owned by renowned business Naim Attallah in the 1980s, who was a close friend of the late princess; as a result of their friendship, he became the owner of the asset and decided to put it up for bidding and arranged the auction.
Although this is not the first time that Kim Kardashian has purchased antique fashion accessories. Earlier, during the last year’s MetGala, she was seen in a Marilyn Monroe gown right from Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” museum. She even stated that she had to lose 7 kg to fit into the iconic gown.
Marlyn Monroe was seen wearing the vintage gown while she was paying a happy birthday tribute performance to US president John F Kennedy back in 1962.
Though some of the Kardashian fans are showing up negative reactions to Kim’s vintage purchases, apparently, a fan has even termed Kim as “plastic,” saying that she spoiled Marlyn’s iconic dress and now she is up for spoiling Diana’s neckpiece as well.
